On December 18th to19th, SPE student chapter of UPC and Petroleum Engineering Graduate StudentUnion held 3rd Session of Petroleum Enginnering English Contest in EngineeringBuilding B conference hall 347. Ten finalists contended. Department of DrillingEngineering Associate Professor XunchengSong, Depatment of Oil Field ChemicalEngineering Professor WeianHuang, Department of Reseevoir Engineering AssociateProfessor Yongfeiyang, Department of Reservoir Engineering postdoctorXiaofeiSun were invited to be thefinal judges.
The contest was divided into two parts:preliminary contest and intermediary heat.32 undergraduates and graduate students attended the preliminary contest,including 6 overseas students from all kinds of countries. Through 90 minutes'furious preliminary contest, 10 outstanding competitors succeeded.
The inals are composed of q&a and translation in a limited time.The player whoget the highest score win the competition.In the section of q&a,the playersanswer the question in turn. Others can race to be the first to answer thequestion.When the host read the question in English,the players hold their breathto catch every information and so do the audience.After that, Liu Qiang,one ofthe competitor hold a soild lead because of his agility.In the section two,theplayer choose one topic on their major to translate in turn and the judges willgive the mark.As soon asthe topic is given,the player get down totranslate.After that,the judges give an evaluation and suggestion.In theend,Liu Qiang win the first prize,and Mr.Zhong and Mr.Wang win the second and third prize.
It is reported that the contest is aimed at providing a chance for studentstocheck their professional foreign language ability and building a platform toshow what they had learned. Intermediary heat applied in form of SPE Petrl Bowl, which shows thecomprehensive ability of students' professional foreign language and helps themlearn and be familiar with the question types and the rules.It laid thefoundation of storing and selecting talents.
